Lemon water can be good for the kidneys, especially in lowering the risk of kidney stones. Drinking enough water is the most important thing, and the citrate in lemons may help prevent some kinds of kidney stone.
Lemons contain citrate. When there is enough citrate in the urine, calcium crystals are less likely to clump together and form stones in the kidney. So lemon and other citrus drinks may in some cases help prevent kidney stones.
But the key here is water. Drinking enough fluid keeps urine dilute and gives the substances that form stones less chance to clump together. Water is considered the most important drink for preventing kidney stones.
Dr Ashiq Ahmed Siddiqui said lemon water is not just a magic aid to weight loss; it is also a great natural shield for the kidneys.
He said the main cause of kidney stones is excess calcium deposited in the urine. Lemons contain a lot of citric acid, which mixes with the urine, binds to calcium and stops calcium oxalate crystals forming. That can help lower the risk of kidney stones.
As a practical tip, Dr Ashiq Ahmed suggests squeezing the juice of half a lemon into a glass of water each morning. Anyone who already has a large kidney stone or severe pain should see a urologist quickly.
