Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, has said there is no chance of Sheikh Hasina returning to the country in the next 10 years.

“I am speaking from my political experience: there is no possibility of Sheikh Hasina coming back to the country in the next 10 years,” he said. “While in power, the Awami League created an environment in which no civilised person would stand for election. Despite having ability and skill, they did not dare to contest. Despite their wealth and popularity, good people could not run because of the dominance of unqualified, dishonest and the worst elements of society.”

He made the remarks on Thursday in reply to a question from journalists at the Bhola Circuit House.

The Speaker also said it was essential that the coming local government election be free and fair. People have not seen a fair election in the past 17 years, he said, so the Election Commission should choose a method that leaves no room to consider anything other than a fair election.

On Bhola’s gas, he said the district has ample natural gas. An energy crisis has now spread across the country, leaving people unable to work. The people of Bhola using Bhola’s gas is their rightful claim, he said, and the energy ministry should be consulted so that the gas can be used for Bhola’s development.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Shamim Rahman, Superintendent of Police Shahidullah Kawsar and local political leaders were present.
