Gold prices fell again on world markets as the dollar strengthened and bond yields rose, leaving the non-yielding metal facing a sharp weekly loss.
Spot gold fell 0.9 percent to $4,140 an ounce, according to figures on Saturday night (3 October), and is down about 3.5 percent this week. US gold futures fell 1 percent to $4,162.
Market analyst Han Tan said investors were afraid to hope for too much while the US Federal Reserve held to its tight policy, and that gold’s direction would depend on how the Fed handled inflation and a weakening labour market. Gold has fallen more than 20 percent since the war between Iran and the US and Israel began early this year, on fears of inflation and high interest rates.
Other metals have fared no better: silver, platinum and palladium also fell, leaving precious metals with a weekly loss.
The fall is also being felt in Bangladesh, where 22-carat gold is selling at Tk 2,30,772 a bhori, 21-carat at Tk 2,20,391, 18-carat at Tk 1,89,248 and traditional gold at Tk 1,54,256.
