Government to borrow Tk 30,000 crore from banks in Oct-Dec

The government plans to borrow a net Tk 30,107 crore from the banking sector in the October-December quarter of this year, raising the money through treasury bills and bonds.

The net borrowing target for the quarter is Tk 30,107 crore, according to the treasury bill and bond calendar for the December quarter published by Bangladesh Bank. In the July-September quarter the government’s net borrowing from banks was more than Tk 35,000 crore.

The government’s need for funds is rising in the 2026-27 financial year because of a revenue shortfall and the implementation of a new pay scale for public servants.

Revenue collection has fallen Tk 29,000 crore short of its target and is down 5.25 percent on the previous financial year, according to National Board of Revenue data.

The new pay structure will add Tk 105,380 crore to government spending over the next three years, Tk 37,372 crore of it in the current year. Basic pay will take effect in three stages, in July, December and July next year, and public servants will receive all allowances from January 2028.

Officials say the finance ministry will decide which sectors the money borrowed from banks is spent on.

But higher government bank borrowing will also raise interest costs, which could put further pressure on revenue in future.
