French interior minister Laurent Nunez has said that law and order in France is beyond the control of the police. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said mayors in some towns had been given powers to impose partial curfews to protect people’s lives and property.

He said the government would allocate the money needed to help affected areas recover, and that “this money will come from the people behind the violence”.

Lecornu said a law would be drawn up to find ways to make sure those who damaged property pay compensation. The government also announced a partial unemployment fund for people who lost work because of the riots and looting.

The prime minister said the government was talking to insurers to make sure people get help from the fund quickly. He blamed far-left groups for the protests, riots, looting and general instability.

He said an operation against them would begin in Paris on Monday, with 200 officers analysing footage of the violence to identify those responsible.

Meanwhile Nunez offered President Emmanuel Macron his resignation, taking responsibility for failing to contain the protests. Macron refused it and asked him to stay in his post.
