Prime Minister and BNP chairman Tarique Rahman has accused the ousted autocracy and its associates of conspiring in many ways to obstruct the country’s development and destabilise public life. He said intelligence had made it clear that one group was supplying money from across the border, while another network inside the country was trying to destabilise it through worker unrest in factories and other activities.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a large public rally in Rajshahi on Tuesday, held to distribute government incentive payments to sugarcane farmers.
“We have clear intelligence that the autocracy that fled the country is sending money from across the border, and its associates are using that money to try to create disorder and unrest inside the country. Worker unrest is being deliberately stirred up in various factories,” the prime minister told the rally.
“Those who tried to mislead the people with lies before the election and practised the politics of selling tickets have been rejected by the people. Now those same groups have joined hands again and become active in trying to wreck the country’s normal progress and stability,” he said.
Calling for unity to build the country, Tarique Rahman said: “Nobody will come from abroad and build our country for us. We must change our own fortunes by turning the 400 million hands of the country’s 200 million people into working hands.”
At the rally he gave a firm commitment to begin and complete barrages on the Teesta and Padma rivers soon to secure the north’s fair share of water. He also set out plans to give every family a “family card” to help marginalised women become financially independent, distribute “farmer cards” to protect farmers, restart the canal-digging programme and raise the number of beds at every upazila hospital to 150.
He ended his speech by urging people to stand by the BNP government in resisting all conspiracies and building the country, with the slogan “We will work, we will build the country: a Bangladesh for all.”
