An elderly man, Robiul Islam, 65, has died in an apparent suicide in Chowgacha, Jashore. He was the son of the late Hanef Ali Mondol of Jahangirpur village in Singhajhuli union of the upazila. He was found dead near a neighbour’s house early on Monday, and local people recovered the body in the morning after neighbours raised the alarm.

Family sources said that about a year ago Robiul Islam struck his only son, Tarikul Islam, 25, on the head with a spade because he was not doing work at home. Tarikul died on the spot.

Robiul Islam’s brother Ashadul Islam filed a case at Chowgacha Police Station over the incident. Robiul Islam spent some time in jail in that case and was later released on bail.

Family members and local people believe Robiul Islam had long been in mental distress over the killing of his son and the case, and that this may have led him to take his own life.

Mamunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Chowgacha Police Station, confirmed the incident and said the body had been sent to Jashore 250-bed General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
