She never had the chance to go to school, and she cannot read or write. But from childhood, listening to Quran recitations on the radio, Egypt’s Sana Abdel Sattar developed a deep love for the holy Quran. That love led her in time to set out to memorise it.
Life’s many responsibilities and hardships interrupted her efforts again and again. Still, Sana did not give up. After long perseverance and unshakeable will, she has finally memorised the whole of the holy Quran at the age of 71.
Her inspiring story was told in a report by the Indian Urdu news outlet UNA News.
Sana Abdel Sattar lives in the village of Mit Shahala in the Shohada area of Egypt’s Menoufia governorate. Having completed memorising the entire Quran at 71, she now revises it regularly. According to a report by the Egyptian outlet Masrawy, she revises about five juz (parts) of the Quran every day.
Because Sana cannot read or write, she did not become a hafiza by reading the book as others do. Instead she took the whole Quran to heart by listening, remembering and repeating it again and again. Her bond with the Quran formed early in life, and listening to recitation on the radio was one of the main ways she came to know it.
She began memorising the Quran in her early twenties, but the path was not easy. After she married, her household duties grew, and she had to raise three children while handling the family’s many other responsibilities.
