A special drive to stop bird hunting has been carried out in various parts of Sadar and Nakla upazilas on the initiative of the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, Sherpur, the Sherpur Bird Club and the nature and environmental organisation Shine.

The drive went on for about four hours from 6am on Tuesday. Six hala, the traps used by bird hunters, and five decoy herons were recovered. The herons were later released into the wild. Leaflets and stickers were also distributed among local people to raise awareness of protecting birds.

The drives were carried out at Pakuria and Kamaria in Sadar upazila and in Baneshwardi union, number 5, of Nakla upazila. The bird hunters managed to run away during the drive, but their decoy herons, the birds with which the traps are set, could be recovered.

Present during the drive were Sumon Sarkar, wildlife and biodiversity conservation officer of the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, Sherpur; wildlife ranger Md Abdullah Al Amin; Md Mugniur Rahman Moni, founding president of the Sherpur Bird Club, executive director of Shine and a senior journalist; Md Mamun Mia, member secretary of Nakla Upazila Press Club; volunteer Md Golam Zakaria Pabon; and other members.

Acting on information that birds were being hunted, the team also went at midday to look in on the Asian openbill storks that have made a colony in the bamboo clump and rain trees behind Jamal Ostagar’s house at Langaljora East Nasirpur in Jamalpur district. There they exchanged views with the area’s notable people and people of various classes and professions on protecting the birds, and handed out leaflets and stickers. A police team led by sub-inspector Md Khokon Mia of Jamalpur Sadar police station was present.

Sumon Sarkar said drives of this kind to stop bird hunting will be carried out regularly.
