Md Shahadat Hossain, a sub-inspector of Dhaka District North Detective Branch (DB), raided a garage disguised as an ordinary auto-rickshaw driver. Three men were caught red-handed buying and selling weapons at the garage, and a foreign-made pistol, a magazine and bullets were recovered.

The raid took place at about 7pm on Sunday, 18 October, in the Aukpara area of Ashulia.

The three arrested are Johurul, Alvi and Mamun. They are said to be associates of “shooter” Saddam, but their full identities were not immediately available.

According to detective police sources, the three were released from jail on bail some time ago and then resumed weapons dealing and other crimes at the garage. They were associates of the top criminal Saddam and were trying to establish his control in the Aukpara area. DB teams led by SI Shahadat had raided two or three times before to catch them, but each time they sensed the police and escaped.

On Sunday night, SI Shahadat and a DB team changed tactics completely. To avoid being spotted, the officers put on lungis and disguised themselves as ordinary auto-rickshaw drivers. In this disguise they entered the garage and surrounded the men from all sides. After long inquiries and surveillance, the DB arrested the three red-handed while they were dealing in weapons at the garage.

Confirming the incident, Md Saidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Dhaka District North DB, said efforts to catch the ring had gone on for a long time and the operation had finally succeeded. Legal action against those arrested is under way.
