Police have recovered a bomb-like object, two litres of petrol and two circuit-like objects from a bag near the main gate of Fakir Lalon Shah’s akhra in Kumarkhali, Kushtia.

The find was made at about midnight on Sunday, 18 October. Members of the bomb disposal team’s SRU unit defused the object at about 2.30am.

A three-day festival marking the 136th anniversary of Fakir Lalon Shah’s death is under way at the akhra. It was due to end with a closing ceremony on Monday night.

Police said a local tea stall owner saw a white bag lying near the main gate of the akhra at about midnight on Sunday. Opening it, he found a bomb-like object wrapped in red tape, about two litres of petrol and two circuit-like objects. He then told Kumarkhali police and the fair’s organising committee.

Law enforcers reached the scene and cordoned off the area, and the shrine’s main gate was closed for safety. Members of the bomb disposal team later arrived and defused the object.

Jamal Uddin, officer-in-charge of the police station, said security at the akhra had been tightened after the incident. Police are investigating who left the bag there and why.
