The special committee on constitutional amendment of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad will invite people from different classes and professions of society and the state, in phases, for discussions on amending the constitution.
The committee will invite constitutional experts, women leaders, educationists, individuals and organisations involved in the July mass uprising, people involved in drafting the July National Charter, Supreme Court judges and lawyers, teachers, working people and others in leadership roles at various levels to its coming meetings in phases, and will take their views on the matter.
This was announced after the committee’s fifth meeting, held on Sunday (4 October) in the Cabinet Room of the parliament building with the committee’s chairman, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, in the chair.
Representatives of working people who contributed to the July mass uprising and representatives of small ethnic groups and communities took part in the meeting and placed various proposals on amending the constitution before the committee. The committee asked anyone with written proposals beyond what was discussed at the meeting to send them in.
Those present included committee members Nurul Islam Moni, chief whip of parliament; Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman; Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman; State Minister for Planning Md Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki; Shakila Farzana MP; and Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel MP. MPs Dipen Dewan, Anna Minj and Madhabi Marma attended at the committee’s special invitation.
The committee said the proposals raised at its meetings on constitutional amendment and those sent to it in writing would be included in the report it prepares.
The secretary of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and officials concerned from the Parliament Secretariat were also present.
