Villagers in Chougachha, Jashore, have beaten a man to death on suspicion of cattle theft. Mizanur Rahman, 47, was beaten in the Dakshinpara area of Baghardari village in the upazila’s Swarupdaha union before dawn on Monday (5 October).
He was a resident of Batikamari village in the Lalon Shah shrine area of Kushtia district.
Police and local sources said three thieves were trying to break the lock of a cowshed belonging to Idris Ali of Baghardari village before dawn on Monday. When Idris Ali and his son Shafiqul Islam realised what was happening and raised the alarm, villagers gave chase. Two of the men managed to escape, but the villagers caught Mizanur Rahman.
He was seriously injured in an indiscriminate beating by the villagers. Chougachha police, alerted through the national emergency service 999, went to the scene and took him into custody. He was then admitted to the Chougachha upazila government hospital, where he died while under treatment.
Confirming the incident, Chougachha police station officer-in-charge (OC) Mamunur Rashid said the body had been sent to the morgue of Jashore 250-bed General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police have taken one person into custody for questioning over the incident.
