Jamaat-e-Islami held a protest rally in Maheshpur, Jhenaidah, against what it called unusual rises in fuel, gas and electricity prices, a severe fertiliser shortage, and alleged irregularities and partisanship in the appointment of fertiliser dealers, family card supervisors and primary school teachers.
The rally, organised by the party’s Maheshpur upazila unit, was held at the Maheshpur College bus stand at 4pm on Saturday (3 October).
Jhenaidah-3 MP Professor Md Matiar Rahman spoke as chief guest, with Principal Abdul Hai, assistant secretary of the district unit and a member of the party’s central Majlis-e-Shura, as special guest. It was chaired by upazila chief Faruk Ahmed, and other local leaders spoke.
Speakers drew the authorities’ attention to the price rises, the fertiliser shortage and the alleged irregularities in appointments, and demanded adequate fertiliser for farmers, transparent and merit-based hiring and effective action on public-interest issues. Leaders and activists of Jamaat and its affiliated organisations and local people attended.
