DHAKA — Bangladesh Postal Service employees have protested a proposal to attach the General Post Office (GPO) building in Dhaka’s Gulistan, along with the former head office of the Postal Department, to the Secretariat. The proposal described the buildings as abandoned and unused. Employees also demanded that the proposal be withdrawn.
The BCS Postal Association recently issued a statement expressing concern and condemnation. The statement, signed by Atia Sultana, the association’s office secretary and deputy general manager of the Postal Department (Postal Life Insurance, Eastern Region, Dhaka), said the Ministry of Housing and Public Works had sent the chief adviser a proposal to declare the GPO building “abandoned and unused,” include it in the Secretariat’s master plan as an extension and transfer it.
Calling the information in the proposal false, misleading and motivated, the association said the GPO compound is a government-designated KPI (Key Point Installation). Fourteen operational offices of the Postal Department continue to function there. Thousands of people receive postal services from the site each day, and the center, which provides uninterrupted service through the department’s staff, has never been abandoned.
The statement also said the director general’s office of the Postal Directorate has been moved to Dak Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, but other operational offices continue to function from the GPO compound as before.
Condemning the decision to send such a letter to the chief adviser without consulting the Postal Department, the BCS Postal Association said the GPO building is not merely a structure but a place of deep meaning for the department’s roughly 40,000 employees — a symbol of their pride and heritage. The association said any conspiratorial effort to seize the building would be viewed as a direct attack on the country’s postal service.
