DHAKA — Bangladesh’s interim government has decided to promote 7,000 doctors as part of efforts to improve professional standing and the working environment, Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum said Tuesday. A proposal to raise pay for doctors and surgeons is also in the final stages, she said.
Begum, who serves as adviser for health and family welfare, made the announcement as chief guest at the opening of the 52nd annual scientific conference of the Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh (OSB) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center (BICC) in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
“We value the professionalism and sacrifice of doctors,” Begum said. “Many doctors have long been waiting for their rightful promotions and changes to the pay scale. Taking their demands into consideration, we have moved forward with promotions on a large scale. We want doctors to carry out their duties with enthusiasm.”
The event was chaired by Shahab Uddin, convener of the Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh. Sayedur Rahman, special assistant to the chief adviser; Saidur Rahman, secretary of the Health Services Division; Shahinul Alam, vice chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU); Abu Jafar, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services; and Nazmul Hossain, director general of the Directorate General of Medical Education, also spoke.
Eye specialists from Bangladesh and abroad are taking part in the three-day conference.
