Police have arrested Md Shiblu, 28, also known as Bullet Shiblu, who came to public attention after a video of him parading with a weapon in Anwara, Chattogram spread on social media.
He was arrested at about 3:30am on Tuesday, 6 October, at his in-laws’ house in the Purbapara area of Hetikhain village in Hailodhar union of the upazila.
He is the son of Abul Hashem of Nasir Member’s house in the area, and is named in the first information report of a case over an attack on the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Police said a case of attempted murder was filed at Panchlaish Model Police Station on 5 September over an attack and gunfire on a gathering of students at Sholoshahar in the city during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in July 2024. The case names 95 people, with Nurul Azim Roni, former general secretary of the Chattogram city unit of the Chhatra League, as the main accused. Shiblu is accused number 69.
Shiblu is also the main accused in a case over an attack on local residents who had protested against the harassment of a female madrasa student in Anwara. He is further accused of beating and harassing Md Ariful Islam, a member of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Welfare and Force division who had come to the village recently during the Eid holiday, and of snatching his mobile phone.
Local people allege that a video of Shiblu holding a weapon spread on social media on 28 February last year. After hiding for some time he returned to the area and formed a teenage gang. Residents said that although he paraded openly with locally made weapons, nobody dared to protest out of fear.
Md Junayet Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Anwara Police Station, said no weapon was found on Shiblu at the time of his arrest. Police are checking whether there are other allegations against him, after which he will be sent to court.
Mahmudul Hasan, assistant superintendent of police for Anwara Circle, said: “Shiblu was arrested in a special operation. He faces several cases, including one of attempted murder. We are also checking whether there are cases against him at any other police station.”
