A covered van driver’s helper was killed when the vehicle went out of control and hit a tree in Sharsha, Jashore. The dead man was Arif Hossain, 30.
The accident happened at about 6:30am on Tuesday, 6 October, at Khajura on the Navaron-Satkhira highway in the upazila.
Arif was from Sherpur in Bogura. Sub-inspector Anisur Rahman of Navaron Highway Police Station confirmed the incident.
Quoting local people, police said the van was carrying chicks from Satkhira towards Jashore when the driver lost control in front of Khajura mosque on the Navaron-Satkhira highway, and the vehicle hit a roadside tree. Arif, the driver’s helper, was critically injured. Local people rescued him and took him to Sharsha Upazila Health Complex, where the duty doctor declared him dead.
Dr Sukhendu Kumar Majumdar, a medical officer in the emergency department of the health complex, said: “Arif, who was critically injured in the road accident, died before reaching the hospital. He died of excessive bleeding.”
Sub-inspector Anisur said: “The driver fled right after the incident. Efforts are under way to detain him. The covered van has been taken into custody.”
