Twenty students fell ill with breathing difficulty during class at Lakurtala Sonarbangla Secondary School in Barguna, in what doctors described as mass hysteria.

The incident happened at about 12 noon on Tuesday, 6 October.

Nine of the students have been admitted to Barguna 250-bed General Hospital, while the other 11 were given first aid and sent home in the care of their guardians.

School authorities and local sources said a Class 7 girl suddenly felt severe breathing difficulty and fell ill during class at midday. Within the next 30 minutes, 19 more students in Classes 7, 8, 9 and 10 developed the same symptoms. The sudden incident caused panic across the school.

Headteacher Abul Hossain said: “Guardians were informed quickly right after the incident. Relatives came and took 11 of the sick students to local private hospitals and clinics, and took them home after first aid there.”

The remaining students were sent by ambulance to Barguna 250-bed General Hospital, where the duty doctor admitted nine of them and began treatment.

Dr Nihar Ranjan Baidya, the duty doctor at Barguna General Hospital, said: “All nine students who came with symptoms of breathing difficulty have been admitted after treatment. They were all essentially affected by mass hysteria. All the admitted students are now completely out of danger.”
