Bangladesh records 17 measles-linked deaths in single day, highest of outbreak

DHAKA — Bangladesh recorded 17 deaths from measles and suspected measles in a single day, the highest daily toll of the current outbreak, the country’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

The figures were issued in a news release from the DGHS control room on Monday, May 4.

It said 1,302 suspected measles cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of suspected cases from March 15 to May 4 to 41,793.

In the past 24 hours, 154 confirmed measles cases were reported. From March 15 to May 4, the total number of confirmed cases reached 5,467.

From March 15 to May 4, 28,842 people were hospitalized with suspected measles. Over the same period, 25,151 patients were discharged after recovery.

Two confirmed measles deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of confirmed measles deaths from March 15 to May 4 to 52.

Another 15 suspected measles deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of suspected measles deaths from March 15 to May 4 to 259.
