7 more children die with measles symptoms in 24 hours; 887 infected

Seven more children have died with measles symptoms across the country in the 24 hours to 8 a.m. Saturday, the Directorate General of Health Services said. Over the same period, 887 children were infected with measles or showed measles symptoms.

The bulletin said seven more children had died with measles symptoms nationwide in the past 24 hours, but that no child had died of confirmed measles.

That brings the total number of children who have died with measles symptoms nationwide since March 15 to 584. A further 93 children have died from confirmed measles — meaning 677 children in all have died of measles or measles symptoms over that period.

In the past 24 hours, 80 children were infected with confirmed measles, while patients with measles symptoms numbered 807. Over the same period, 746 children were newly admitted to hospital and 574 were discharged.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services, the total number of suspected measles cases from March 15 to date stands at 91,789, with 10,949 confirmed cases. Of these, 75,902 patients were admitted to hospital, of whom 71,970 have since been discharged and returned home.

The figures were released in the Directorate General of Health Services’ measles update report on Saturday afternoon, June 20.
