Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that any disinformation campaign conducted on social media to damage Bangladesh’s image will be dealt with firmly.

“Those involved in cybercrime and disinformation will be swiftly identified through proper investigation, and legal action and exemplary punishment will be ensured,” he said.

He was speaking during a courtesy call by Palestinian Ambassador Yousef S.W.Y. Ramadan at the Secretariat on Thursday (July 2) afternoon.

Ahmed said Bangladesh is a progressive, liberal Muslim state. He noted that the country has historically provided unwavering support for Palestine’s independence struggle and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.

“Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman played a significant and memorable role in building international opinion and securing diplomatic support for Palestine,” he said. “Bangladesh’s principled and moral support for Palestine will continue in the future.”

The Palestinian ambassador said a large number of Palestinian students are studying at various public and private institutions in Bangladesh. He requested special cooperation in providing on-arrival visas to facilitate their travel and studies.

The home minister directed relevant officials to provide the necessary assistance and asked the ambassador to send a formal request through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Ministry of Home Affairs for official consideration.

The ambassador also proposed that Bangladesh embassies in Middle Eastern countries facilitate visa applications from Palestinian nationals and students seeking to study in Bangladesh.
