DHAKA — The government will install solar panels in phases at all educational institutions across the country, Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon said.
Milon said the government would not cut corners on the education sector and has set a target of producing 2,000 megawatts of solar power by 2030.
He spoke as chief guest at an event held at Dhaka Residential Model College in the capital.
The education minister said solar power systems would be rolled out at all educational institutions in stages. Alongside expanding the use of renewable energy, the government is working to develop educational institutions as environmentally friendly campuses, he said.
The minister said the government is planning to ensure that students do not spend more than 10 years to reach the Secondary School Certificate examination and its equivalent at the end of the secondary level. The government is also working to reduce session jams so that students can complete their education on time, he said.
Addressing students, the minister said: “Your 10 years of schooling to pass the SSC must remain 10 years, not stretch to 12. There should be no session jam. You must not fall behind. We will discuss and decide with that goal in mind. Whatever is needed in your interest will be done.”
Stressing the need for change in the education system, the minister said: “We will not talk only about GPA-5. What students have learned is what matters. The country’s education system needs major reform.”
Earlier, a 600-kilowatt peak on-grid OPEX-model solar power project was inaugurated at Dhaka Residential Model College as part of an initiative to develop a “net-zero campus.”
