Three teachers at a hifz madrasa in Zianagar upazila, Pirojpur, are accused of tying up an 11-year-old student’s hands and feet and beating him with a cane. A local mediation was held and the student’s family was offered 5,000 taka for medical expenses, but no disciplinary action was taken against the accused teachers, drawing anger from the family.

The student, Julhas Sardar, 11, is the son of Miraj Sardar of Pattashi village and has been studying in the hifz department of Pattashi Darul Ulum Nesar Uddin Madrasa for approximately two years.

According to the complaint, the student was bound hand and foot and beaten with a cane in a room at the madrasa a week ago after being accused of “bad behavior” toward classmates. Three teachers — Nazima Talim, Sakib Hossain, and Osman Hossain — were allegedly involved. The student’s uncle, Jamal Sardar, was later called to take the boy home.

A mediation session was held on Tuesday at the madrasa premises with parents in attendance. Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Ali Hossain, Pattashi Union BNP President Kabir Hossain Khan, and madrasa management committee chairman Md. Alamgir Hossain were present. However, the accused teachers were not summoned to the session. The mediation decided to pay 5,000 taka for the child’s medical expenses. The family and locals expressed dissatisfaction that no punitive measures were taken.

Jamal Sardar said: “When I raised the issue of my nephew being abused, they only decided to pay for medicine. No teacher has been punished. We were forced to accept the mediation verdict under community pressure.”

Maulana Ali Hossain, the upazila Jamaat Amir who mediated the session, said the student was punished for “bad behavior” and the matter was subsequently resolved.

Madrasa management committee chairman Md. Alamgir Hossain said a show-cause notice has been issued to the teachers involved after the committee became aware of the incident.
