Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government has launched a pilot project to collect cow urine from farmers. The project has begun in 15 villages of Bulandshahr, where about 500 litres are currently collected each day.
The Adityanath government plans to collect the urine at Rs20 per litre in the future. Tanks with a capacity of 200 litres have also been installed in the villages.
The project aims to provide farmers with additional income, create jobs for rural women and support the upkeep of cows that no longer produce milk.
About 300 women have joined the project and been made shareholders of the farmer-producer organisation. Women who help collect the urine receive a commission of Rs2 per litre.
The collected urine is planned for use as a raw material in agriculture to develop alternatives to chemical fertilisers and farm inputs. If the project succeeds, a separate policy will be formulated to roll it out across the state.
The Samajwadi Party has called the initiative a “scam” and alleged that the government is carrying it out to collect election funds. The BJP rejected the allegation, saying the SP opposes every development project of the government.
