Qatar has said the United States is interested in beginning talks with Iran again. Doha has been maintaining contact and mediating with Washington and Tehran for several weeks to that end.
Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari gave the information on the margins of a Qatar Economic Forum event in New York.
He said Qatar’s mediating team is looking for a way to restart talks with Iran and the United States. Various proposals and ideas have been discussed with the two sides over the past few weeks.
Al-Ansari said: “We are working, through our mediating team, on whether talks can be started again with Tehran and the United States. Many proposals have been exchanged between the two sides.”
He said Qatar’s aim is to narrow the distance between the two sides and find the right time and route for a return to talks.
The Qatari official also said the public statements of various officials of the US administration had conveyed the message that they want to reach an understanding. Washington is also interested in finding a solution to end the war, he said.
