A Chhatra League activist, Naim, 25, was caught by locals while burgling the home of an expatriate in Nesarabad, Pirojpur. In the incident, the expatriate’s wife and daughter and a third person were stabbed and seriously wounded, and were admitted to the Nesarabad upazila health complex. Naim, son of Rafiq Mia of ward 7 of Swarupkathi municipality, is an active worker of the banned upazila unit of the Chhatra League.
The incident took place at 10am on Thursday in ward 7 of Swarupkathi municipality.
Local people said Naim climbed a betel-nut tree beside the house of expatriate Ilyas Hossain and entered. When Ilyas’s wife, Nazma Akter, who was inside, saw him and moved to make a phone call, he began stabbing her indiscriminately with a knife he was carrying. When her daughter came to save her on hearing her scream, she too was attacked, and when a neighbour, Nuhin Mia, son of Jahangir Hossain, came forward, he was also seriously wounded. As Naim tried to flee, local people caught him and later handed him to Nesarabad police.
Nazma Akter, being treated in hospital, said: “I was doing my housework as usual. Suddenly I saw Naim climb the betel-nut tree beside my house and come inside. When I saw him and screamed and went to phone for help, he told me not to call and threatened me. As I screamed, he began stabbing me indiscriminately with the knife in his hand, and he stabbed and wounded me, my daughter and our neighbour Nuhin Mia. When neighbours came at our shouts, they were able to catch him.”
Miraj Mia, the elder brother of expatriate Ilyas Hossain, said: “My younger brother has been abroad for a long time. Taking advantage of that, a young man named Naim came to burgle the house in broad daylight and stabbed and seriously wounded three people. They are now under treatment.”
Nesarabad police station officer-in-charge Mehedi Hasan said Naim and his father, Rafiq, had been brought to the station and that the legal process was under way.
