Shoes have to be worn all year round. Whatever the season — winter, summer, monsoon or autumn — there is no getting by without shoes and socks on your feet. Working men and women, in particular, have to go out every day. But for those who have to walk outdoors in shoes during the monsoon, the trouble is endless.

The problem of shoes getting dirty in mud and rainwater becomes acute. An even bigger problem is the smell of shoes and socks. But just as there is a problem, there is also a solution. Here are some tips to avoid it.

  • Instead of wearing the same pair of shoes every day, wear them in rotation. This can help somewhat.
  • You can apply antibacterial powder before putting on your socks.
  • Usually the smell spreads when the feet tend to sweat. Bacteria spread quickly on sweaty, damp feet, and the smell grows over time. So applying antibacterial powder will relieve this problem.
  • After returning home, you can soak your feet for a while in lukewarm water mixed with salt.
  • Scrubbing away the dead skin cells on your feet will also reduce the smell.
  • Wearing socks in rotation rather than the same pair every day can also help. You should always wear clean socks, and if your skin is sensitive it is best not to wear socks for more than a day.
  • Rather than keeping shoes or socks on for long periods, taking your shoes off now and then to let air reach the soles of your feet will reduce the chance of odour.
  • After coming home from outside, socks should be air-dried. And even after washing them with soap and water, they must be dried thoroughly, or the smell will return.
  • Shoes should be kept in a place with light and air circulation rather than in an enclosed space.
  • If you have to keep your shoes on for a long time, you can tie the laces loosely so that you can slip the shoes off whenever you get the chance and put them back on easily.
  • Synthetic socks increase foot odour, so avoid wearing them; wear cotton socks.
  • Various fragrances to remove foot odour are now available in the market, and you can use those too. If you take care of your feet, odour can easily be avoided.
