Three people were killed and 15 injured when a passenger bus collided head-on with a sand-carrying truck while overtaking on the Chandpur-Cumilla highway in Chandpur’s Shahrashti upazila on Tuesday.
The crash occurred at about 9:30 a.m. near Patoari Bari in Baniyachong. The dead were identified as sand-truck driver Abdul Wahab, 45, bus driver Kamal Hossain, 40, and bus supervisor Shobon Mia, 35.
The bus was traveling from Dinajpur to Noakhali and the truck from Hajiganj to Cumilla, according to witnesses. Police and firefighters recovered the bodies and took the injured to Shahrashti Upazila Health Complex. Several seriously injured people were transferred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, including two sent to Dhaka.
Police seized both vehicles, and traffic on the highway was halted for about two hours. Shahrashti police said at least 15 people were injured and that legal proceedings were under way.
