BEIRUT — A Lebanese journalist for the daily Al-Akhbar was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon, the newspaper and the Lebanese Health Ministry said.

Amal Khalil was killed after Israel struck the area, and rescuers pulled her body from the rubble several hours later, the newspaper said.

The Health Ministry said two people were killed in the first strike. Israel then struck again, hitting a house in the southern Lebanese village of al-Tiri where Khalil and her colleague Zeinab Faraj had taken shelter.

Rescuers recovered the seriously wounded Faraj and the bodies of the two people killed in the first strike, the Health Ministry said. But Israeli forces then opened fire on the rescuers, preventing them from reaching Khalil. Her body was recovered at least six hours after the strike.

Khalil, a resident of southern Lebanon, had been reporting for Al-Akhbar since 2006. Her last report was on Israeli forces destroying Lebanese homes in villages where they were positioned.

Khalil’s death brings to nine the number of journalists killed in Lebanon in 2026.
