Indian police have deported two Bangladeshi women through the Benapole Checkpost after they completed two years of imprisonment in India. Around 9 pm on Tuesday (May 12), the Petrapol Immigration Police handed them over to the Benapole Checkpost Immigration Police.
The returned women are Happy Khan (43) and Marieta Hawladar (26), residents of Khizur Bazar village in Bagherhat district.
Benapole Immigration Police Inspector (Investigation) Syed Mortaza Ali said they had gone to New Delhi, India, illegally in March 2023 in search of a livelihood through a broker. They were caught by police while working in a rented house there. Subsequently, the court of that country sentenced them to two years in prison for illegal entry.
They further said that after their release from jail, an Indian human rights organization took responsibility for them and kept them in a shelter. With the cooperation of both countries’ embassies and special travel permits from the Indian government, they returned to the country last night (Tuesday).
After completing immigration formalities, they were handed over to the Benapole Port Police Station. A human rights organization named Justice and Care will take them from the station and hand them over to their families.
Justice and Catering’s Jessore Field Facility official Shafikul Islam said Asad will be handed over to his family today (Wednesday) after being picked up from Benapole Port police station.
