An auto-rickshaw driver has been arrested for allegedly luring a woman with a false promise of giving her meat from a religious ceremony and then snatching her gold and silver jewelry in Srinagar upazila, Munshiganj. Local residents caught the suspect and handed him over to police.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday near a madrasa in the Kabutarkhola area of the upazila.

The arrested man, identified as Samrat, 27, is a resident of Josildia in Louhajong upazila, Munshiganj. He drives an auto-rickshaw for a living.

According to police and local sources, Amena, 60, a resident of Char Janaja Khasher Hat in Shibchar upazila, Madaripur, had come to the Kabutarkhola Madobarbari area for work at a household. When she was unable to recall the name of the homeowner she was looking for, the suspect allegedly tricked her by offering to take her to a place where she could receive meat from a religious ceremony and instead led her to a secluded location.

There, he allegedly intimidated her and snatched her gold earrings, silver chain, and bangles before attempting to flee. Local residents noticed the incident and detained the suspect along with his auto-rickshaw. Srinagar police were then informed and took him into custody.

Srinagar Police Station Sub-Inspector Moazzem said residents detained a young man and alerted police, who went to the scene and took the suspect into custody. A silver chain was recovered from him. Legal proceedings are underway.
