New chairmen named for 8 city development authorities, 7 are BNP leaders

The government has appointed new chairmen to eight city development authorities. Seven of them are BNP leaders.

The Public Administration Ministry issued separate gazette notifications on Thursday (June 11) night appointing the new chairmen to these city development authorities. They have been appointed on one-year contracts at the grade-2 level of the pay scale. The appointments will take effect from the date they join.

Among the eight, Udbatul Bari Abu, president of the Cumilla city BNP, has been appointed as the first chairman of the Cumilla Development Authority. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, former president of the Rajshahi city Jubo Dal, has been appointed chairman of the Rajshahi Development Authority.

Motahar Hossain Talukder, who contested and lost in the 13th national parliamentary election on the BNP’s sheaf-of-paddy symbol, has been appointed chairman of the Mymensingh Development Authority. Rezaul Hasan Lodi, acting president of the Sylhet city BNP, has been appointed chairman of the Sylhet Development Authority.

In addition, the government has appointed Md. Shamsuzzaman Samu, convener of the Rangpur city BNP, as chairman of the Rangpur Development Authority; Belayet Hossain, former joint convener of the Chattogram North district BNP, as chairman of the Chattogram Development Authority; and Mashkul Islam Rajib, joint convener of the Narayanganj district BNP, as chairman of the Narayanganj Development Authority.

Meanwhile, engineer Mohammad Jasim Uddin, a close school-days friend of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and a former official of the state-owned Eastern Refinery, has been appointed chairman of the Cox’s Bazar Development Authority.

On the other hand, the remaining terms of Mohammad Salauddin, appointed on contract as chairman of the Cox’s Bazar Development Authority, and Md. Nurul Karim, appointed on contract as chairman of the Chattogram Development Authority, have been cancelled.

Joint Secretary S M Tuhinur Alam had been in charge of the Rajshahi Development Authority chairmanship. He has been placed under the Public Administration Ministry for his next posting.
