Jamaat-e-Islami will hold a mass rally in the capital on 5 August to demand implementation of the July Charter, said Mohammad Selim Uddin, a member of the party’s central executive council and Ameer of Dhaka Metropolitan North. He accused the government of creating a rift in national unity by failing to honour its pledge of constitutional reform.

He made the remarks at a press briefing on “36 July” (5 August) held at the Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka Metropolitan North office in Baridhara in the capital on Monday (29 June) afternoon.

Selim Uddin said July was not merely a month but a roar against hegemony and a historic chapter in the defence of independence and sovereignty. The history and spirit of July, he said, must be properly conveyed to the new generation.

He added that those now in power had taken a position contrary to what they had said about July before coming to office. Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka Metropolitan North announced a 36-day programme. Selim Uddin said the wing would also play an active and strong role in implementing the centrally announced July-themed programmes.

The programme includes graffiti drawing from 1 to 10 July; meetings with martyrs’ families from 11 to 16 July; discussion meetings and photo exhibitions at sites of martyrdom from 17 to 30 July; a gathering with teachers and students on 24 July to honour the contribution of private universities; prayers and gatherings at mosques on 31 July for the salvation of the martyrs’ souls; gatherings of clerics, workers and women from 1 to 4 August; and the historic mass rally in the capital on 5 August to demand implementation of the July Charter.
