Two reasons US-Iran talks keep failing, Vance tells Fox News

US Vice-President JD Vance has warned that the United States will use every tool at its disposal to bring a “proper end” to the ongoing conflict with Iran.

In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday (5 August), he said the United States would use every strategy — military, economic and diplomatic — to resolve the conflict.

Asked why talks with Iran keep stumbling, Vance cited two reasons. First, Iranians were an extremely stubborn people, he said. Second, their system of government was quite divided.

He said there were many within their governing structure who wanted the war to end, but also many “madmen” and hardliners who wanted to keep it going.

Vance said: “Our job is to get past these obstacles and produce the best outcome for the American people and the president of the United States.”

While expressing hope that a solution to the conflict would come, Vance warned that the process would be quite complex and would take some time — but “we will succeed.” He also said oil prices would fall and stay stable.

The vice-president said firmly that Iran would never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon and that the United States would remain in a stronger position. But to turn this crisis into a proper solution, “we will use every tool at our disposal — military, economic and diplomatic,” he said.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also said at an event in Las Vegas on Wednesday that he was giving priority to reaching a deal with Iran over taking military action. “I would rather make a deal, because I don’t want to kill people,” he said, while warning that the path of force remained open to the United States if diplomacy failed.

On 18 June, Washington and Tehran signed a framework agreement and began talks towards a final deal. But the talks eventually stalled over disagreement about security and guarantees of free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The situation flared up again last month when the United States struck inside Iran. In response, Tehran claimed to have carried out counter-attacks on US military installations and equipment in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait.
