Israel’s far-right finance minister Bezalel Smotrich strongly praised the demolition of 26 Palestinian buildings in the occupied West Bank. He confirmed that the destruction of Palestinian infrastructure in the northwestern West Bank had begun, Al Jazeera reported.
Smotrich said: “This destruction is an essential step to strengthen the security and settlement of the State of Israel and will serve as the country’s protection.”
Under international law, Israeli settlement construction in the occupied West Bank is considered wholly illegal. The International Court of Justice recently ruled that Israel’s presence and settlement activity in occupied Palestinian territory are unlawful and ordered their rapid withdrawal. Israel has nevertheless continued to expand its control and settlements in the West Bank.
