Bangladesh Bank has given National Bank PLC permission to lease Tower-2 of its proposed head office building, the “NBL Twin Tower,” as a commercial property. For this the bank has been exempted from the application of a provision of the Bank Company Act, 1991 until December 31, 2031.

Bangladesh Bank’s Banking Regulation and Policy Department-2 (BRPD-2) issued a circular on the matter on Tuesday, July 21.

The circular said the decision was taken under the powers conferred by section 121 of the Bank Company Act, 1991. As a result, Tower-2 of the NBL Twin Tower (holding no. 1/C/1, Bir Uttam C R Datta Road, Panthapath, Dhaka), owned by National Bank PLC, may be leased as a commercial property.

For this purpose, the provision of section 10 of the Bank Company Act, 1991 (as amended to 2023) will not apply to National Bank PLC until December 31, 2031.

The circular, signed by Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Dr. Md Kabir Ahammad, said the decision takes effect immediately.

Analysts say the decision will let National Bank use the unused part of its head office building commercially and earn additional rental income, helping the effective management of the bank’s assets and increasing its earnings.
