The country’s peak power demand over the next five years is near 24,000 megawatts. Although demand rises each year, its growth is expected to stay within 24,000 MW by 2030. By international standards, 20 to 25 percent extra generation capacity above actual demand is kept for emergencies, maintenance and uninterrupted supply — known as spinning reserve. Even by that calculation, the country’s total need by 2030 should not exceed 30,000 MW. But under government plans, generation capacity is being raised to 35,000 MW; in fact, once currently under-construction projects are finished and the Rooppur nuclear power plant comes into production, capacity could reach about 37,000 MW. Although some old and expired plants will close, significant surplus capacity above need will remain. There are now 31 power plants under construction, due to be completed by 2030, most of them fossil-fuel-based, with a total capacity of about 5,500 megawatts.
