Bangladesh reports 6 more child deaths from measles, suspected cases in 24 hours

DHAKA — Six children died of measles and suspected measles symptoms across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services. Four of the deaths were among children with suspected symptoms and two were confirmed measles cases. During the same period, 1,445 new children were either infected or showed symptoms of the disease.

The figures came from the health directorate’s latest report released Tuesday.

According to the directorate, 317 children have died of measles or related symptoms nationwide over the past month and a half. Of those, 54 deaths were confirmed measles cases, while 263 involved children with suspected symptoms.

The report also said 5,726 people have been confirmed infected with measles since March 15, while 42,979 children with suspected symptoms have been admitted to hospitals. Infections and deaths have been highest in Dhaka division, where 163 children have died and 23,360 have been infected with measles or shown symptoms of the disease.
