A 30-year-old man, Abdul Jalil, was killed when his uncle allegedly struck him with a stick during a land dispute in Hatibandha upazila, Lalmonirhat.
The incident happened at midday on Saturday (27 June) in the Dhowlai Paglar Bazar area of Noudabas union in the upazila.
The deceased, Jalil, was the son of Alges Ali of the area.
According to local sources, Alges Ali and his brother Abdur Razzaq had been in a land dispute for nearly 10 years, with a case also pending in court. At midday, the two sides went to work on opposite sides of the disputed land — Alges Ali’s son Jalil on one side, and Abdur Razzaq and his son Saddam on the other.
At one point during the work, a fierce argument broke out between the two sides. The uncle, Abdur Razzaq, became enraged and allegedly beat his nephew Jalil severely with a stick, leaving him gravely injured on the ground.
Locals then took him in a critical state to Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex, but the doctor on duty at the emergency department, Dr Anarul Haque, said Jalil had died before reaching the hospital.
Hatibandha police station officer-in-charge Ramzan Ali did not answer repeated calls to his official mobile phone for comment.
Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police Asaduzzaman confirmed the incident, saying the Hatibandha OC had been ordered to file a case quickly and arrest the accused as soon as the incident became known. Police operations to arrest the accused were under way, but no one had yet been detained or arrested, he said.
