A 15-year-old boy was allegedly abducted and tortured over a trivial matter in Savar, in a case in which Savar Chhatra Dal general secretary Mahabub Hossain Samir, 32, is the prime accused. The family alleges the boy lost the sight of both his eyes. The accused student leader has been expelled from the organisation.
On Friday (26 June) night, the boy’s brother-in-law, Swapan Chandra Sutradhar, filed a case naming Samir as the prime accused along with five people. The case’s investigating officer, SI Md Abdul Wahab, confirmed this to Naya Diganta on Saturday afternoon. The accused Chhatra Dal leader, Samir — also known as Fancy Samir — is the son of Motiur Rahman of Deogaon in Savar.
According to the case statement, on the afternoon of 30 May the boy was playing with several peers in the Palwanpara area of Madhya Rajashan in Savar when a dispute arose over an accidental collision with another local boy. The Chhatra Dal leader Samir, identified as the elder brother of that boy, was angered and ordered his associates to find the boy.
The statement says that on 2 June at around 4pm, when the boy left home to play from in front of Rajdhani Bakery in the Rajashan Palwanpara area, five to six unidentified people, including the case’s second accused, Manik — also known as Pistol Manik, 28 — and the third accused, Sajib, 27, picked him up and took him to an office room belonging to the prime accused, Samir. Samir and the fourth accused, Alauddin — also known as Alamgir, 25 — and the fifth accused, Md Naim Islam Badsha — also known as Pistol Badsha, 25 — were present in the room.
There, on Samir’s orders, the other accused allegedly slammed the boy’s head against the wall and struck both his eyes repeatedly with a stick, severely damaging the corneas of both eyes, the statement says. At one point a great deal of blood came from his nose and eyes. When his body went limp, the accused, thinking him dead, left him in front of the gate of his house and fled. His parents and relatives then rescued him and first took him to Savar Upazila Health Complex. As his condition worsened, he was admitted to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The boy’s brother-in-law, Swapan Chandra Sutradhar, citing doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, told Naya Diganta that doctors said both his brother-in-law’s eyes were destroyed and that there was a blood clot inside the skull. The boy is currently at home.
Locals have demanded a proper investigation, the swift arrest of those involved and exemplary punishment.
Chhatra Dal Dhaka district north general secretary Mahfuz Iqbal did not answer repeated calls to his mobile phone on the matter.
Meanwhile, on Friday afternoon, the central Chhatra Dal relieved Savar police-station Chhatra Dal general secretary Mahabub Hossain Samir of his post on a specific charge of breaching organisational discipline. The information was given in a press release signed by Chhatra Dal central office secretary Jahangir Alam. It said Samir had been relieved of his post after a charge of breaching organisational discipline was raised against him, and that the decision had been approved by Chhatra Dal central president Rakibul Islam Rakib and general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir.
The expelled Samir, at a press conference in Savar on Saturday afternoon, claimed he was not involved in the incident. He also claimed that a deliberate smear campaign, false information and conspiratorial propaganda were being spread against him, and that the party had relieved him without issuing any show-cause notice.
