Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world’s leading container shipping companies, has suffered a major loss after the Strait of Hormuz was closed amid the Middle East conflict. The company said the closure caused a $600 million loss for the group in the second quarter, Al Jazeera reported.

The German shipping giant said on Thursday that net profit fell to $83 million from $306 million a year earlier. Strong exports from Asia and improved demand in the United States partly offset the losses caused by instability in the Middle East.

The closure increased costs for bunkering, insurance, storage, rerouting and inland transport. As a result, operating profit in the liner shipping division fell to $153 million from $167 million.
