Iraqi parliament Speaker Haibat al-Halbousi has called on Iran to give Iraq special consideration or favorable treatment for oil exports through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. He made the appeal during talks with Iranian parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, according to a report by an Iraqi news agency.

Highlighting the need to protect Iraq’s economic interests, al-Halbousi said Iraq has been among the countries hit hardest by recent regional developments. Given that, he said, the bilateral relationship between the two countries should be given serious weight, and steps should be taken that help safeguard Iraq’s economic interests.

In response to the Iraqi speaker’s appeal, Iranian parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran is keen to further expand cooperation with Iraq, particularly in trade and economic sectors. He also emphasized continuing joint work to implement various agreements previously signed between the two countries.
