Tehran will not make any concessions on its nuclear program even if the United States agrees to Iran’s proposal. A senior Iranian official told British news agency Reuters this on Friday, September 25.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until the United States meets all of Iran’s conditions.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that under their proposal, the strategically important Strait of Hormuz would be opened. Alongside this, war on all fronts, including Lebanon, must be stopped within seven days. The United States must lift naval blockades on Iranian ports, release seized Iranian funds and withdraw oil sanctions.
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, the Strait of Hormuz has now become an important bargaining issue in ending the Iran-US conflict. Iran wants to reduce economic pressure through the withdrawal of US blockades. The United States, meanwhile, wants ship movement to return to normal on this important global oil supply route.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session on Thursday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran hopes to reach an understanding with Washington on ending the war before the US midterm elections on November 3.
No concession on the nuclear program
Iran said it is ready to sit for detailed talks on its nuclear program if the United States accepts its conditions. However, the Iranian official made clear that Tehran will not make any concessions on its nuclear rights, including the right to enrich uranium.
The official said Iran would also not accept the US demand to send its highly enriched uranium out of the country.
Israel, the United States and several Western countries have long accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons. One reason is that Iran has enriched uranium up to 60 percent, far higher than the level needed for civilian use and close to the roughly 90 percent needed to make weapons. Iran has always denied allegations that it is trying to develop nuclear weapons.
