A security plan has been proposed to bring the overall management, surveillance and inspection of Iran’s strategically vital Strait of Hormuz fully under the country’s own control, under the direct supervision of the armed forces’ General Staff. Iranian parliament member Ibrahim Rezaei confirmed the matter, according to the country’s state broadcaster, IRIB.
International broadcaster Al Jazeera reported Wednesday, August 19, that if the newly proposed draft plan for shipping, fee collection and security management in the strategic waterway is implemented, vessels identified as hostile, involved in espionage, or posing a threat to Iran’s national security would be completely barred from entering the Strait of Hormuz.
Under the proposal, the armed forces’ General Staff would also be given authority over all rules and policies for collecting transit fees and various service charges from any commercial or military vessel passing through the strait.
Iranian lawmaker Rezaei further clarified that if Iran’s interests are harmed anywhere in the world, Tehran could use the Strait of Hormuz to retaliate against the state responsible. In such cases, he said, strict measures could be taken, including imposing additional tariffs on that country’s vessels or confiscating its ships and assets.
