A newlywed named Shefa (18) has died by suicide by hanging in Chougacha, Jashore. She was the daughter of Mujibul Islam of the Kutipara area of Chougacha municipality and the wife of Khalid Bin Walid, alias Setu, son of Mintu of Chutarhuda village in the upazila. The incident occurred on Sunday night in the Kutipara area of Chougacha municipality. Setu runs a clothing shop called Best One at Akbar Market in Chougacha town.
According to Shefa’s family, Setu and Shefa were married two months ago. But from the time of the marriage, the family alleges, Setu and his family demanded a large sum of money from Shefa’s family — first to do business and later to go abroad. When Shefa’s family failed to pay, she was subjected to mental and physical torture in various ways, the family says. At one point, left with no option, Shefa hanged herself at her father’s house on Sunday night. Family members rescued her and took her to Chougacha hospital, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the area. Chougacha police station officer-in-charge Mamunur Rashid confirmed the incident, saying legal steps would be taken on receiving a complaint.
