Police in Saudi Arabia have arrested about 15,000 migrants over the past week on charges of breaking the law. The country’s interior ministry said a total of 14,970 violators were detained in drives across the country from 16 to 22 July.

Among them were 7,437 offenders under the residency law, 3,991 under the border security law and 3,542 under the labour law.

In addition, another 1,626 people were detained while entering Saudi Arabia illegally across the border, most of them nationals of Ethiopia and Yemen. Thirty-three people were caught while leaving the country illegally, and 18 were arrested on charges of helping or sheltering violators.

Legal proceedings are currently under way against more than 30,000 offenders, and more than 13,000 people have been sent back to their own countries. The Saudi authorities have issued a stern warning that helping illegal migrants can bring 15 years in jail and a fine of up to 1 million Saudi riyals. The public has also been urged to inform police confidentially if they see such offences.
