Saudi Arabia’s security forces arrested 7,760 illegal residents over the past week. The information was given through the Saudi Gazette, citing the country’s interior ministry. The ministry’s statement on Saturday said the individuals were arrested in operations conducted jointly with various government agencies from 28 May to 3 June. Of those arrested, 4,060 had violated residency law, 2,574 border-security law and 1,126 labour law.
The statement said 1,184 people were arrested while trying to cross the border illegally — about 28 percent of them Yemeni nationals, 70 percent Ethiopian and the remaining 2 percent from other countries. Another 25 people were detained while trying to leave the country illegally. Saudi authorities said 4,690 illegal residents had already been sent back to their own countries, 14,495 had been referred to diplomatic missions to obtain travel documents, and 850 were in the process of completing travel arrangements.
The report also said 16 people involved in transporting, sheltering or employing illegal migrants had been detained. A total of 21,774 expatriates are currently under legal process — 20,455 men and 1,319 women, the ministry said. It warned that helping, transporting, sheltering or assisting illegal entry in any way could carry up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to 1 million Saudi riyals.
