Three of one family drown while bathing in lake in Siddhirganj

Three members of one family drowned while bathing in the DND lake in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. A diving team of the fire service recovered their bodies after a several-hour operation.

The incident occurred on Saturday (June 13) afternoon in the Kashempara area of South Kadamtali, in front of Nabana City, near the Burma stand.

The dead are Md. Rasheduzzaman (22), his brother-in-law Md. Galib (18) and his sister-in-law Mst. Suraiya (12).

According to police and local sources, between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Rasheduzzaman, his brother-in-law Galib and his sister-in-law Suraiya went into the DND lake to bathe. At one point they drowned. When they could not be found, local people informed the fire service and police.

On receiving word, the diving team of the Narayanganj river fire station began a rescue operation. After several hours of effort, the bodies of Rasheduzzaman and Galib were recovered first. Suraiya’s body was recovered later.

The home of the dead Rasheduzzaman was in Monag village of Kashiani upazila in Gopalganj district. His father’s name is Deloar.

Relatives said he had come to Dhaka last week in search of work to earn a living.

Galib and Suraiya’s home, meanwhile, was in Raghunathpur village of Kalia upazila. Their father is Akram. They had been living as tenants in the home of advocate Jalal in Kashempara, South Kadamtali.

Mizanur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of the Siddhirganj police station, said: “According to family members, all three knew how to swim. How this accident happened even so is being looked into.”

Police said that, after the rescue operation, the bodies were handed over to relatives once the necessary legal formalities were completed.
