Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) historic Champions League title, won by beating Arsenal in the final, turned to violence in various parts of France. Police carried out operations nationwide to control the situation, arresting more than 400 people.

According to France’s interior ministry, a total of 416 people were arrested by Sunday dawn, 280 of them in the capital, Paris.

After PSG’s win, thousands of supporters took to the streets of Paris to celebrate. But as the night wore on, disorder and clashes broke out in various places, and large numbers of police were deployed.

Videos in local media showed fireworks and flares being set off in various areas. In places, motorcycles and electric bikes were set on fire, and several shops and properties were vandalised.

Police said at least seven officers were injured in the violence. Tear gas was used to control the situation as tensions spread in several areas. According to authorities, at least six vehicles, two businesses and a bus stop were damaged.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez called the incidents “completely unacceptable” and announced strict action against those involved. Violence had also accompanied an earlier celebration of a PSG European title, in which two people died, one of them a 17-year-old.

Meanwhile, a victory parade with the PSG players was arranged in Paris on Sunday, with French President Emmanuel Macron due to meet them.
